Two of Mackay’s largest and most dynamic organisations have joined forces in a bid to attract more major sporting events to the region.
The new partnership between Mackay Airport and Harrup Park is a collaborative, strategic plan aimed at securing more national and international sporting showdowns to grow overall visitation.
Mackay Airport Head of Operations Adrian Miles said Mackay was ideally positioned to welcome more major events in 2024.
“We have never been better connected to the rest of Australia, with new direct routes and more flights,” he said.
“Sports fans can visit Mackay to watch a world-class game, and then stay on to experience our many unique attractions and activities.”
“There is huge potential here to tap into the sports tourism market, which would enhance our regional profile, support our local operators and bolster the overall economy.”
“We also know that the Mackay community loves to attend and support sporting events, from grassroots games through to major matches. It is fantastic that we can contribute further to the lifeblood of our community and future generations.”
Harrup Park’s Great Barrier Reef Arena (GBRA) is one of Australia’s largest regional sporting facilities, delivering a world-class contemporary experience for both live and broadcast audiences.
The arena seats up to 10,000 people for sporting events, and regularly hosts key elite cricket and AFL fixtures.
Harrup Park Chief Executive Officer Adrian Young said the arena would become a destination for more major key events, including national and international sporting carnivals, concerts and festivals.
“We will have a significant role to play in the lead up to and during the Brisbane 2032 Olympics,” he said.
“We will host a significant number of events, hopefully including Olympic cricket. Athletes love playing at the GBRA. They get to come to our beautiful region, enjoy amazing playing facilities and soak in the community atmosphere and the fantastic support they receive here.”
“Our partnership with Mackay Airport will play a crucial role in making new opportunities a reality.”
